Paralysis

There are several different types of paralysis. Paralysis is caused by damage to the central or peripheral nervous systems creating an inability for signals to travel up and down the spine to communicate between the body and the brain. These signals can be sensory or motor signals and can affect different parts of the body. The different types of paralysis are quadriplegia, paraplegia, monoplegia, diplegia, and hemiplegia.

  • Quadriplegia is paralysis of all four limbs and is also known as tetraplegia.
  • Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower half of the body with involvement of both legs.
  • Monoplegia is paralysis affecting a single limb, body part, or group of muscles.
  • Diplegia is paralysis of corresponding, symmetrical parts (such as the legs).
  • Hemiplegia is total or partial paralysis of one side of the body.

Any of these types of paralysis could be the result of a slip and fall, sports-related injury, automobile accident, or medical malpractice. The treatment involved might include short-term and long-term physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, and clinical psychology to name a few. The mounting hospital bills and treatments should not be a concern during this time devoted to healing and recovering. Allow an experienced attorney to review your case and advise you on any potential for recovering compensation in the event your injury was the result of another person’s wrongdoing.

According to a study initiated by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis — approximately 6 million people. That’s the same number of people as the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. This number is nearly 33% higher than previous estimates showed. The numbers are staggering. Accidents while working and motor vehicle accidents largely account for the majority of spinal cord injuries that result in paralysis (52%). The estimated lifetime costs for an individual who suffered a spinal cord injury at age 25 ranges from $1.5 million to $4.5 million depending on the severity of the injury.
